Career Change - The Right Mindset

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

To make an effective career change, you need to be in the right frame of mind. It is pretty obvious that if you are feeling negative about changing direction, you won’t be motivated to take the action necessary.

What is perhaps a bit less obvious is how to get yourself into the right frame of mind, especially if you are bored and frustrated by your current job. If you are feeling down, chances are you won’t be able to make good choices and if you do move jobs, you could find yourself in another less than exciting post..

So how do you cultivate the right mind set?

It’s important to ask yourself why you want a career change, as the motivation must come from you, not from someone else.Of course, it helps enormously to have friends and family support you in your decision, but you shouldn’t be contemplating a new career just because they think you should..

It’s about fulfilling your dreams, not the dreams of your parents or your partner. Spend some time thinking about exactly what you want to do and how you can reach your goals. This doesn’t mean that you disregard the opinions of people who are close to you. If your decision is going to affect them directly, then it’s important that you talk through your decisions.

Having decided on your dream, how do you keep the motivation going? Is it about positive thinking, saying affirmations or visualizing success?

It could be about all of these, if they appeal to you, but the two main points are that you identify your passion and then find a way to get from where you are now to where you want to go.

A Career In Civil Engineering

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

What Is Civil Engineering All About?

Civil engineering deals with a variety of construction and maintenance tasks, like building and maintaining roads, bridges, tunnels, buildings, airports, dams, water works, sewage systems and ports. A civil engineer not only requires a high standard of engineering knowledge, but also supervisory and administrative skills. The work involves planning, constructing and maintaining.

The planning and designing part demands site investigation, resource feasibility study and on-the-spot decision making. An engineer has to be quick to make a decision because emergencies do come up and need to be dealt with then and there. Other important duties of an engineer involve taking care of work within the local government guidelines and getting permission for plans, creating a cost estimate and construction schedules and post-completion maintenance of the project.

There are many specialized branches of civil engineering such as dealing with structures, water resources, environment, construction, transportation and geo- technical engineering. For most projects, civil engineers work in teams or sometimes even in coordination with other engineers.

Civil engineering is ideal for those who love to create and the job is monetarily rewarding and involves a lot of responsibility. An engineer is directly responsible for public safety and welfare. Safety should be the first priority of any engineer. If they are involved in constructing residences, they have to follow the safety precautions involved too. In the case of a highway, they are expected to follow traffic safety rules.

Engineers have to look out for potential hazards, including environmental impacts and estimated life expectancy of the project. Natural disasters make it important for engineers to be extra cautious about environmental pressures.

Building Your Career In Civil Engineering:

To begin a career in civil engineering, you need to complete a formal school education, including core courses in English, Algebra, Geometry, Advanced Math, Physics and a foundation in History and Social Studies. In college, a student needs to earn a Bachelor’s degree. Pursuing a Master’s degree is necessary. According to a recent survey, more than 35% students who have acquired a Bachelor’s degree go on to enroll for a Master’s, even as they continue to work. Many students prefer to work and earn at the same time because that can earn them a tuition reimbursement.

Acquiring a Master’s degree or a PhD helps a student to specialize in the field. The road to complete a civil engineering course is endless and that is why many professionals choose to keep on learning the latest trends in the construction business via special programs developed by universities and professional societies like the American Society of Civil Engineers. The annual earning of a civil engineer is anywhere between $43,000 to $90,000, depending on specialization and experience.

Debt Consolidation - Get Rid of Your Debt Burden - Repay Your Loans

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Debt consolidation loans are taken to repay existing loans. This can help you in reducing your debt burden. If you have taken a number of loans, debt consolidation helps you in consolidating all your loans into one manageable loan.

This can help you reduce your interest burden by charging an interest rate lower than the rate on your existing loans. Debt consolidation can also allow you to make small monthly payments by extending the loan period.

Just like any other loan, this loan can be secured or unsecured. A secured loan is given against collateral, whereas, no collateral is required for an unsecured debt consolidation loan.

One of the most important criteria to avail a debt consolidating loan is to improve your credit rating. When you repay your existing loans, your credit rating automatically improves. An excessive debt burden and an inability to repay loans may also lead to situations like County Court Judgements, bankruptcy etc. Debt consolidation can save you from such situations by reducing your debt burden.

Different lenders offer different loans schemes. Before going for a debt consolidation loan, make sure that it meets your requirements. Before taking a loan, you should do some research on loan fees, interest rates and repayment terms. Do not borrow more than you need.

There are ways to reduce your debt burden even if you fail to get a loan. In such a situation, you may consider a debt settlement. Such a settlement can help you consolidate your debt and reduce interest rates so that you end up saving money on your repayments.

A number of lenders offer debt consolidation loans through the internet. Once you apply over the internet, your application is processed, and if your application gets the approval, you are given the loan.

All of us are in some form of debt but having a debt problem is something different and needs to be resolved quickly. If you have borrowed many varying amounts from several financial institutions and are able to repay the installments on time while still meeting your day to day expenses, this means that you have control over your debts, so this is not a problem. Counseling for Diabetics

    Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, you need counseling. In fact, you need several different forms of counseling to help you manage your disease properly. The key to living well with diabetes is education.

You may experience depression when you are first diagnosed, and mental counseling is a good idea. Mental therapy will help you to accept the condition, and help you to see that life really is going to move forward, and that you can still move forward with it.

The next kind of counseling you need is nutritional counseling. A nutritional counselor can work with you and your doctor to help devise a meal plan for you. The meal plan will be designed to help control your blood sugar levels, and to help you lose weight if that is needed as well.

If you have been prescribed medication, you need pharmaceutical counseling. This is done with your pharmacist when you pick up your prescriptions. It is vital that you take the time needed for this counseling. Plan it in advance, and make sure that you ask any questions that you may have.

You should also have a counseling session with your doctor. During this session, you should ask any questions that you may have. You should also learn about the complications that can arise with diabetes, what to be on the lookout for, proper foot care, and a variety of other information. Learn as much as you possibly can, and seek out other sources of information as well.

Ask your doctor about support groups for diabetics in your area. These groups will really be a big help. Everyone in the group has been exactly where you are, and you can learn a lot concerning foods, exercise, health concerns, and even insurance coverage.

With all of this counseling, you will see that you do not have to fear your condition. You are just as capable of living a normal life today as you were before you were diagnosed with diabetes. It isn’t a death sentence. You are not going to be limited or confined in any way — as long as you manage your diabetes properly.

Personal Goals as a University Of Phoenix Student

    Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

    140e
Personal goals I want to achieve as a University of Phoenix student.

There are many goals I want to achieve as a student of the University of Phoenix. Some of them will be easier to achieve then others, but I will be doing my best to accomplish them all. One of the obvious goals is to achieve the highest grades as possible. Throughout High School this was not a goal for me and I chose not to apply myself and was happy to settle for just any grade. In doing so I missed out on a lot of material I could have been studying and learning about. Settling for any grade also posed a problem when I graduated High School. When I graduated High School and began looking into going to college I found I was limited in the colleges I could apply to. I found I was limited due to the below average grades I received. When I started my Associate Degree my outlook on education completely changed and I was not willing to settle for any grade. I also did everything I could to learn and take away as much information I could from each and everything course. As!

I am starting my Bachelors Degree at the University of Phoenix I still have the mindset of obtaining the highest grades as possible. I feel even stronger about obtaining and maintaining high grades. To achieve this I will stay committed to reading all of the material provided and will complete all assignments to the best of my ability.

Another goal I have is to stay organized in school so I will have free time for friends and family. I have been doing this by listing out everything, which is required for me to do during the school week. I list out the assignments and readings as well as deadline for the material to be completed. I have been able to stay organized this way by doing a little work each day. I find pacing myself has been a big help instead of attempting to do everything all as one and waiting until the last minute. I recently began using my lunch break at work to complete some schoolwork as well. This has been extremely useful as it allows me to spend more time with family and friends since a good portion of my daily schoolwork can be completed. It is very helpful having a good portion of my schoolwork done before I even leave from work.

An additional objective of mine is to be able to assist others during the time I am obtaining my degree, as well as after my degree is obtained. I really enjoy meeting others and assisting people any way I can with issues and problems they may have. Assisting people with their problems is a big part of what I do as a police officer and that is one of the biggest motivators that keeps me in the profession. With the education and experience I am receiving at the University of Phoenix I am able to take the skills and experiences and apply them on a daily basis to assist coworkers as well as members of the public whom I deal with throughout the day. I realize some people are not as fortunate to be able to continue their education and feel those fortunate enough to have been able to continue their education have an obligation to assist others. During my schooling I hope to assist my peers with any problems or questions, which may come up. I have some skills in t!

he area of computers, which may be helpful to those who have no had the opportunity to get behind a computer much.

My final goal is to learn as much from my peers as possible. During my Criminal Justice degree program at the University of Phoenix I will have the opportunity to meet and speak with many different people who are doing the exact same thing I am doing as a police officer. Some people will have less experience and others will have more, but most important everyone learned things from their own experiences. A goal of mine is to learn from each and every one of my peers and to take something from each person. Each person will bring to the table different strengths, which will assist me in my field now and for years to come. I hope in meeting new people it will give me the opportunity to build up many more contacts and recourses in the field. These are a few of the many goals I plan on achieving as a student at the University of Phoenix. With determination and discipline I believe I will be successful in achieving these goals.

An Easy Comparison Of The English To Spanish Alphabet

    Sunday, April 27th, 2008

    126d
Learning the Spanish alphabet requires only learning three more letter than are found in the English alphabet. These include ch (che), ll (elle) and ň (eňe). The fit into the alphabet in an order that also makes sense, following the letter from the English alphabet that starts with the same similar letter. Here is the order they appear in:

    a,b,c,ch,d,e,f,g,h,I,j,k,l,ll,m,n,o,p,q,r,s,t,u,v,w,x,y,z.

Letters Not A Part of the Alphabet

There is some controversy, believe it or not over a couple of the letters that come from other languages of similar origin. This lies with the letters “w” and “k.” There are not any Spanish words that contain these letters, unless they were added to the language from some foreign translation. In addition the letter “rr” not in our list above is used in some versions of the Spanish alphabet. It is used to make a stronger “r” sound, usually in the case where the “r” is drawn out in a rolling sound.

    Putting Things in ABC Order

A Spanish dictionary may add more confusion to the inclusion of some letters of this language’s alphabet. For example, older edition dictionaries might list all the words containing “ch” after all “c” words. In newer versions, the words containing “ch” go in alphabetical order just like in English. The opposite is true when it comes to “n” and “ň.” In this case “ň” comes after “n.” This whole change took place as recently as 1994.

Not officially a part of the Spanish alphabet, there are many other “letters” created by the addition of accents. Many vowels such as o, e, or u have accents added which change the pronunciation and also the meaning. Many other languages treat accented letters as separate letters and add them to their alphabets. This is not true of Spanish.

    What Spanish Letters Sound Like

English letters are not given names and neither are Spanish letters. However, when you say the letter it has a pronunciation all its own that could be thought of as its name. The following is the Spanish alphabet with a pronunciation guide. Remember, this is not a phonetic pronunciation, even though some of the English letters will have a similar sound. And of course, you need to take into account the Spanish accent.

    A: a
    B: be
    C: ce
    CH: che
    D: de
    E: e
    F: efe
    G: ge
    H: hache
    I: i
    J: jota
    K: ka
    L: ele
    LL: elle
    M: eme
    N: ene
    ?: e?e
    O: o
    P: pe
    Q: cu
    R: ere
    S: ese
    T: te
    U: u
    V: ve
    W: doble u
    X: equis
    Y: i griega
    Z: zeta

If you speak English (and that’s a good assumptions since you are reading this in English) then you already know many Spanish words. Spanish and English have the same basis as all Romance languages. The spelling may be different such as between the words baby in English and bebe in Spanish but the pronunciation is very close, differing only in the accent given the words.

Once you have mastered the sounds of each letter it is easy to begin learning Spanish. You’ll be prepared for your next vacation to Spain, or at the very least, be able to help your kids with their homework!

The Spanish people are warm and welcoming to American or other visitors. They will be flattered that you are making an effort to communicate with them in Spanish, but in tourist or cosmopolitan areas, you will find everyone also speaks fluent English. Don’t let that discourage you. Keep practicing you Spanish for your next visit to Spain.

Jerry Blackburn pens for the most part for http://www.alicante-spain.com , a web publication with information about Spain and spanish culture. With his detailed writings like http://www.alicante-spain.com/spain-tips/spanish-alphabet.html ,he proofed his expertise in the field.

Advantages Of Earning Your Degree Online

    Sunday, April 27th, 2008

    115f
Online at the Back of the Line

If earning your degree, especially as a mid-life returning student, is about personal fulfillment or training to start your entrepreneurship, then where or how you get your degree isn’t important to you. What’s important is simply that you learn what you need to learn.

If, however, you’re looking for a degree to start or advance your career and you’ll need to impress an employer or potential employer with that degree, you may be somewhat at a disadvantage having earned it online.

It doesn’t seem fair, and in the next few decades this will undoubtedly change as online degrees become more common. But for now there is some resistance on the part of employers to the idea that you have learned as much as you might have in the classroom. The most notable exceptions to this are in the areas where the job skills you’ll tackle once you get your degree rely on your technical and Internet savvy: high tech, new media, and telecommunications. Many employers also value an online consultant-related degree as highly as one earned on campus.

Employers’ concerns about online degrees are that the student is losing out on valuable career-related input because of failure to interact face to face with instructor and peers. They also say it’s just such a new concept that the jury has to be out on whether students are really learning this way - unlike classroom-focused education.

The career choices for which employers are least likely to accept online training are in health care, legal professions, biotechnology, governmental and financial services.

A survey of hundreds of human resource executives resulted in several suggestions for online-degreed job hunters: (1) Be up front with the employer that you earned your degree online; (2) Come to the interview armed with verification of the courses’ or degrees’ value - textbooks, tests, course materials, information on accreditation and even testimonials from respected educators or graduates who now hold influential and respected positions; (3) Offer some real hands-on experience such as an internship in the field. (4) Intersperse your online courses with courses or outside activities that show your team and people person skills - join Toastmasters, hold an office (student, non-profit organization or otherwise, join the school debate team or write for the school paper).

With one notable exception these do seem like good suggestions. The first idea, to let your employer know up front that you earned your degree online, seems self-serving on the part of these human resource folks. Surely this is not good advice for a job candidate who is under no obligation to explain how she or he got the degree - unless of course she bought it.

But that’s an ethics issue. This is not. What this is more likely about is the employers’ desires to delve into things about which they have no business. In the minds of many, undoubtedly, those who earn their degrees online are those who are tied down as caregivers of children, older than the age of the typical college student (which isnt’ really typical anymore anyway,) or perhaps medically homebound for a time. None of which is ever the business of a recruiter.

The best advice, ultimately, for those who earn their degrees or part of their degrees online, is that they do not share this information unless asked directly. This is probably going to be sound advice at least until there has been a decade or so of entrepreneur or executive level success as a result of online-degreed education.

    Got Credit Debt Blues?

    Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

For many people, debt is a way of life. However, it does not have to be. If you are currently swimming in credit card debt, there are a variety of different things you can do to eliminate your debt and work your way to financial freedom.

One of the first steps in eliminating your credit card debt is to quit using your cards all together. The more debt you rack up on the cards, the harder it will be to get the debt paid off. In order to overcome your debt, you must also have an accurate picture of the amount of debt you currently have. Therefore, you will want to sit down and make a complete list of all of your credit card debt.

After you have an accurate list of who you owe money to, you can then move forward. You may want to considerate debt consolidation. With debt consolidation you either obtain a personal loan, home equity loan or use a credit card with a low interest rate to consolidate all of your debt into one bill. In most instances, you will save a considerable amount of money by placing all of your debt into one loan or onto one credit card. When obtaining a home equity loan or a personal loan, you will generally receive a much lower interest rate than you are currently carrying on your credit cards.

Another viable option is to enroll with a debt management company. They can work with you and your creditors to lower your monthly payments. As well, they can help you set up a plan to reach all of your financial goals. Many companies offer classes on debt management.

If you are unable to consolidate your debt or would prefer not to work with a debt management company, there are still options. If you have several credit cards that need to be paid off, begin by paying off the smallest credit card. Continue to pay the minimum monthly payments on the other cards, while applying any extra on the card with the smallest balance. After you have completely paid off that credit card, you can then begin tackling the next smallest credit card. Be sure to apply the extra money you were paying on the first credit card, in order to reduce the debt a lot quicker.

Once you have completely paid off your debt, you need to make sure that you do not end up in a similar situation again. Therefore, it is important that you cut up the credit cards as you pay them off. Each credit card that you cut up, is a step closer to your financial freedom. You can keep one credit card for true emergencies. However, it is important that you have an accurate understanding of what a true emergency is. Should your water heater suddenly quick working and need replaced, this constitutes an emergency. However, a sale at the local mall is not even close to an emergency.

If you want to get out of debt, you must begin by changing your habits. With a few simple steps, you can easily free yourself from the financial burden of credit cards. Keep in mind how you got in this situation, so that it doesn’t happen again.
