The Benefits Of Student Exchanges

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

1437
Maybe you’ve considered travel. I used to think that I would travel when I was done school. Then, it occurred to me: there’s no time like the present. Going on exchange was the best thing that I could have done. Here are a few reasons that studying abroad is great:

1. It’s cheaper.

When you travel as a student, it is often cheaper than traveling later in life. There are a few reasons why: you can get great student discounts (get an ISIC card: an International Student Identification Card), you don’t mind staying in hostels, and sometimes the school will help you pay.

2. It’s more organized.

If you have been scared to travel because you don’t want to do all the paperwork of getting a passport, a visa, and you don’t know how to book a flight, don’t worry. If you go on an exchange through school, your school will help you with all of the international paperwork. They can answer all your questions. You might not have a lot of experience traveling: they have a lot of experience sending students on exchange. Don’t be afraid to benefit from their experience.

3. It’s the real experience.

Often when people travel, they take cruises or tours. As much fun as a Contiki tour is, you will probably never get to know any of the places that you visit. You would only hang out with your friends who you came with. If you go on exchange, instead of staying at each place for only a day or so, you get to stay for a few months, or even a year. This means that you will really get the feel for your destination. You will make friends with people who are locals. You will have enough time to really absorb the new culture.

4. It’s a rewarding (and awarding) time.

You can get certain awards, prizes, and fellowships for studying abroad. You can even get some when you return from your trip. If you are worried that you won’t be able to pay for your trip, find out about some internationalist awards that you can win, and take the time to apply. There are also special loans for students who plan on studying abroad.

5. It’s more fun to learn.

When you go on exchange, you will take courses at another high school or college. Yes, there will be school. But the real learning that you do when you are on exchange is not done in the classroom. You will learn things at school, but you will be amazed at how much you learn when you are just having fun. Go sightseeing, see everything you can see. Sign up for field trips and get out there. You’ll remember more about your art history if you go see the Sistine Chapel!

If you are going to a country where English isn’t the primary language, now is the time to learn that language. Take some courses (even buy some tapes) before you go. Don’t be afraid to make a mistake in that language. Just practicing will help you improve. You will find your trip is more rewarding if you make the effort to learn a second language. (Be careful: often when people find out that you are an exchange student, they will want to practice their English with you. However, you can politely explain that you are here to practice their language and they will often understand).

6. It helps you learn about yourself.

You might think that you have traveled to another country to learn about that country. But you will find that you also learn more about your country when you travel because you will start comparing your culture to another culture. When other people ask you questions about your country, you might learn new things about your history, geography, and politics. You will come back to America knowing more about who you are and where you come from.

7. It looks great on a resume.

In the end, after you have traveled the world, seen all the sights, and come back a better person, you will be able to put this exchange on your resume. You will be able to explain your experience for jobs, future education, and other positions that you apply for.

8. It’s easy to finance.

If you are concerned about financing your exchange, don’t worry. You can get special loans to help you. Check out the link below.

A Career as a Medical Assistant is Within Your Reach

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Many people dream of a career in medicine. The idea of helping others by providing vital care when they are ill is appealing. There are several different career paths to pursue for someone who wants to get into this field. A great choice for an individual who wants to provide patient care without years and years of related time spent in a classroom is to become a medical assistant.

Virtually every medical office whether it???s the office of a high profile plastic surgeon, or a clinic in a small town, employs medical assistants. These individuals are often viewed as the back bone of the practice and it is through their hard work and dedication that the office keeps running on a smooth course. The medical assistant aids in so many areas including helping behind the front desk, taking on tasks related directly to patient care and then following up with laboratories and image and diagnostic centers.

There are several different types of medical assistants including those who specialize in a particular field of medicine. In addition to working in a general practitioner???s office, some assistants feel a pull to working in other environments where their expertise could be utilized. This may be in the office of an ophthalmologist, a podiatrist, a gynecologist and even in a laboratory. Although the responsibilities allocated to the assistant will differ slightly depending on where they work, their main focus remains the same and that???s to be a source of help for the doctor and other medical personnel.

There are naturally many skills that a physician???s assistant must have in order to correctly perform their job. These typically include having an aptitude for working with a computer as the assistant can often be found behind a desk handling the demanding job of scheduling appointments, tending to the billing and calling other doctor???s offices for referrals. Although this may appear at first glance to be something of a mundane way to work in medicine, it???s not at all. Without the skilled expertise of the assistant, the office itself would grind to a standstill.

Many assistants prefer to work in an office where they are given the opportunity to aid directly in patient care. Although a medical assistant is not permitted to give a medical examination, they are often trained to take a person???s vital signs upon entering the examination room, and they may also be skilled in giving injections or drawing blood. It can be incredibly rewarding for the assistant to spend a few moments with each patient as they arrive at the office, asking about what their medical issue is as well as taking a brief medical history. For this reason it???s very important that the assistant have an empathetic nature and be friendly.

Credit Card Processing:Step by Step Processing

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

This includes general information with a shipping address usually. This follows with the consumer entering payment information either into a form secured by a protocol or into an application, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. With the secured form, the payment information is protected by Secure Sockets Layer as it is sent to the merchant. Using the payment software incorporated in the Web server, the merchant sends the encrypted transaction to the acquiring processor for authorization. The authorization is a request to hold funds for purchase. The acquiring processor either authorizes a certain amount of money or declines the transaction. An authorization reduces the available credit limit but does not actually put a charge on the customer’s bill or move money to the merchant. If the transaction is authorized, a “capture” is the next step. The capture takes the information from the successful authorization and charges the authorized amount of money to the consumer’s credit card merchant service. In line with bank card association rules, the merchant is not allowed to capture transactions until the ordered goods can be shipped, so there may be a time lag between the authorization and the capture .If the consumer cancels the order before it is captured, a “void” is generated; if the consumer returns goods after the transaction has been captured, a “credit” is generated.

The final step is to “settle” the transaction between the merchant and the acquiring processor. Captures and credits usually accumulate into a “batch” and are settled as a group. When a batch is submitted, the merchant’s payment-enabled Web server connects with the acquiring processor to finalize the transactions and transfe the cash to merchant bank account

How To Get Your Site Googled Quick and Cheap!

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Not so long ago there was a booming cottage industry that catered to novice internet marketers who were in a bat-outta-hell rush to get their websites indexed by Google.

The purveyors of those services that catered to the burgeoning get-indexed-quickly-by-Google crowd usually directed internet marketing newbies to buy expensive one-way links for the duration of one month from high page rank websites or more specifically, high PR web pages.

Such links commonly cost as much as $800/month (not an expense for the faint of heart, as you can see). But why would someone shell out that kind of money for one measly link?

MYTH 1: Being Indexed By Google Means Lots of Traffic

A lot of new marketers think that once they’ve got their site indexed by Google, they can sit back, relax, kick off their shoes and contentedly watch the show of internet traffic snaking its way to their website. If you happen to have been (or still are) a student of this school of thought take consolation in the fact that you were (are) not alone, not by a long shot!

How come?

Because seo practioners of the day certainly weren’t about to go out of their way to disavow such a misconception; after all it was very much in their interest to perpetuate the myth. How else would they convince you to fork over a princely sum for a mere one-month link? Anyway here’s how the technique worked:

When you bought a one-way link on a webpage with a page rank value of 7 and above you were guaranteed of getting your website crawled by the googlebot within 24 hrs at the outmost which by proxy ensured that your site was indexed within 24 hrs. If your link was found on a web page with PR8 and above, your site would be indexed by Google within hours thanks to that high page rank link!

MYTH 2: Being Indexed By Google Means A Turbo-Charged Dash Up The SERPs

The 2nd selling point for acquiring an expensive one-month one-way link was the premise that your website would accelerate up the SERPs once it was indexed by Google. (SERPs stands for search engine rank pages which is just a fancy way of referring to the search engine page that lists relevant websites in response to your query). Obviously the higher up the SERPs your website gets, the greater the traffic flow!

But like any over-inflated bubble this one too had to explode, and so it did in time. With increased awareness and knowledge came new understanding of budget techniques that worked just as effectively. Besides Google effectively nullified the system by introducing the Link-Aging Filter which is an algorithm tweak that negates any influence that any new link may pass to your website or blog until said link has been in place for a certain amount of time. The interval of probation varies from link to link and appears to be based upon the competitiveness of the keyword incorporated in your back-link. The Link-Aging Filter hence effectively nullifies the technique of acquiring short-term links in order to get your website indexed rapidly by Google or accelerate your website up the search engines.

Methods To Get Your Website Googled Quick And Cheap!

1. Submit an original article to a high page rank article directory; don’t forget to include a back-link pointing to your website with the anchor text of your choice! This technique works as follows: article directories are content rich sites (a quality Google loves) and assuming that the directory has a high page rank, you can bet that the googlebot (google crawler, google spider, it all means the same thing) will crawl such a site several times a day. When the googlebot comes across your article it will continue its eternal crawl across your back-link to your site and Hey Presto You Just Got Googled! (Well at least your site did.)

2. The second way to get your website googled fast and cheap, is by getting a back-link pointing to your site on one of the popular tagging websites which includes the likes of: Digg.com, Technorati.com, del.icio.us to name but a few. The trick here is not to get lost in the sea of over-popular keywords; in other words, since you’re aiming to attract the googlebot not eyeballs (human internet traffic), tag your website with a little-used-little-known keyword! Once again these sites are crawled multiple times a day and tend to have a page rank value of 8 and above!

Keyword Research - Is There Actually A Market For Your Product?

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

If you are looking to market a new product, It is imperative that you perform a keywords research before taking the plunge into your new online business venture. A keywords research tool is where you can look at what internet users are searching on the web, and see what are the most searched keywords in the major search engines. If you can find your product among the most searched keywords then you know that your product is in high demand.

However, just knowing if your product is in high demand does not mean that there is a market for it. You next need to look and see what sites come up when you type in that keyword. Sometimes there are people that will have a lock on a keyword, and that means that everyone will buy from them, thus, there would not be much of a market would there? Also may be your niche is over-saturated. It would be like trying to open a bagel shop among twenty others on the same boulevard. Sure you will make some money but not enough to survive your next month!

One thing that you have to remember about keyword research is that it’s very important, but it is not always going to tell the truth. The truth is that a lot of sites will pay for their ranking on a bunch of these search sites. So just because a web site comes up first does not mean that it’s the one that everyone buys from. Also, you have to keep time frame in mind.

If you are looking to start up your own business then you have to know that it can take time for you to get ranked on the major search engines. However, that does no not mean that over time you will not get ranked. It’s very important to not give up right away if your web site is not ranked in the first few weeks. It can take time, but in the end it is worth it.

Another misconception about keywords research is that the “most popular” terms are the most important for rankings. Getting your website ranked number one for a keyword who is unrelated to your site is a complete waste of time and money. Your will see a lot of clicks but your visitors won’t stick around. Also you won’t get any sales in the process and your ROI (return on investment) will be close to zero (if not worse).

This is why I like to search for long tail keywords when I perform a keywords research. Focusing on keywords which receive lower volumes of search engine traffic will lead to an increase in overall targeted traffic to your website. Long tail keywords will also give you a better conversions ratio because you are generating better qualified prospects . Search engines users using long tail keywords are more likely to make a purchase from you. By using these long tail phrases, you are effectively targeting the right market of potential buyers.

Make Money Shooting DIY Videos

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

They are everywhere, YouTube, AOL Videos, Flicker, Metacafe and many more. We are talking about people just like you making and posting videos for the public to view.

With the availability of almost any subject, and I mean almost *any* subject, a video can address why not use the opportunity to have some fun, learn a lot and perhaps make a few extra dollars along the way. It may even help pay for all that equipment you’ve been wanting.

Speaking of equipment, actually you need very little to start. Of course, you will need a camcorder and computer to upload to the video server. Nevertheless, take heart; you do not need anything near broadcast quality equipment, especially when just starting.

When looking for a camcorder, carefully consider the MiniDV format. While the newer MiniCD and internal hard drive camcorders do offer convenience, these formats do not lend themselves to the easy editing like the MiniDV. One thing you do not want to use is anything with analog tape, such as VHS or Super 8. While these were once/are popular formats they are not digital, therefore editing is much more difficult with these systems.

Another consideration is a camcorder with an external microphone jack. While almost all entry-level camcorders will shoot an adequate video (adequate may not necessarily be professional), without a mic jack the sound will suffer. Videos with only adequate video and poor sound will not be successful; indeed, it may even be a determent for your future videos if someone buys your poor sounding video first. Remember—Sound Matters!

One entry-level camcorder I have used and can recommend is the Canon ZR800. Currently (March ‘08) the ZR800 can be purchased for under $200 US Dollars. This camcorder has a mic jack and is likely the only one you will find for less than $500 that will have one. In addition, the picture quality is OK for a DIY video.

Another critical must have is some type of lighting setup. A very common lighting unit is a converted halogen shop light. These lights can be found at many big box stores such as Big Lots, Lowes, Wal-Mart, etc. While they provide a lot of light, it is a harsh light and needs to be toned down somewhat for video use. One good way to do this is bounce the light off a nearby wall or use foam board to reflect the light back to your subject. In a pinch, aluminum foil over cardboard or a reflective auto sunscreen will do.

Now back to the microphone (mic). While you can spend hundreds or even thousands for a top quality microphone, likely that is out of the question for most people just starting out. One suggestion is look on eBay for a lapel condenser microphone or a shotgun microphone. One piece of advice; if you are using the ZR800 you need to get a condenser microphone with a built in power supply. This built in power supply (pre-amp) is usually powered by an AA or similar battery.

When I first started, I used a microphone that cost less than $20. While I do not recommend you go this cheap, it does show what you can do on limited funds. Trust me on this one, the $20 mic sounded MUCH better than most built-in camcorder microphones.

You need some way to get the video from your camcorder into your computer; Firewire is the most common and preferred way. When you purchase your camcorder check to see if a Firewire is included or if it is purchased separately. Here’s a tip. If the camcorder you are considering does not include a Firewire cable, buy one off eBay. They are much less expensive there than at the local Best Buy/Circuit City type of store.

Furthermore, make sure your computer will accept Firewire, otherwise you may need to install a card to accept the cable. It’s an easy install.

You already have a movie editor if you are using Windows XP or Vista. It’s called Microsoft Movie Maker. Movie Maker is an easy to use, excellent piece of software that will take you a long way on your film making journey.

The final piece of required equipment will be some type of backdrop. An uncluttered wall or even a bed sheet will do. Just make sure there is nothing in the background that will distract from your message.

Think you are ready to shoot your DIY video? STOP! Now is time for planning or storyboarding your production. Time spent here is some of the most valuable you will spend. Think about shooting your video in 4-5 minute sections to keep viewer attention. Plan what you are going to say, do you need any props? Special set up? Etc?

The last step is practice, practice and more practice. Check YouTube for more great ideas on film making. Best of success to you and your projects.
